11 Games I Loved But Never Finished [11:11]

Hello there! I am very pleased to announce the first Official blogging series brought to gamergal.exe, [11:11]. This series has been in the works for a few months now, and I’m really excited to be able to bring some new content to gamergal.exe on a more regular basis! Without delaying it any further, I would like to welcome everyone to the first instalment of my new blogging series, [11:11].

Have you ever tried to make a top ten list and only end up with nine? Then when you finally think of the tenth, another contender pops into your head resulting in not being able to narrow it down? Well… That’s me. Apparently the number 10 just doesn’t sit well with me, hence the birth of this new blogging series!

Once a month, from April 2019 until February 2020, I plan to post a ‘Top 11’ for a specific category related to gaming. These posts will be released on the 11th of each month, spanning over 11 months (hence the name), totalling in 11 posts! I unofficially started this in January with my Most Anticipated Games of the Year post which is where the main idea for the series came from in the first place. So, to start off the series (officially), here’s 11 games I would consider to be some of my favourites, despite never finishing them for one reason or another (I’m sure we’ve all been there)!

11. Zeus and Poseidon

If you like city building, management games and you also love those cities getting completely obliterated by any means possible, then look no further! This game is always out to get you. I really enjoyed building up a settlement, constructing temples and managing resources, but the game had other ideas. Oh look, an invisible volcano erupted and destroyed my town, never mind, I’ll just rebuild it… oh… I can’t build on magma… what do I do now? The game was incredibly challenging (don’t even get me started on road blocks), therefore I never got very far despite the amount of time I invested, but I still go back to it every now and then to try again. There’s just something about Zeus and Poseidon that makes you want to come back time and time again (or maybe I’m just crazy).

10. Rollercoaster Tycoon 3

Although RCT3 isn’t exactly a game that has an ending, I never got round to finishing all the campaign modes since the Windows 10 update happened a few years back. From then on, for some reason unknown to me, the game stopped working entirely meaning I can no longer play. I’m gutted I can’t get it to work as I would still be playing this game now if it all ran smoothly. I did buy Planet Coaster on release to fill the hole this game left behind, but unfortunately, it just isn’t the same.

9. Betrayer

Betrayer is a neat little indie game that I wouldn’t have thought to be my taste in the slightest. During this experience, I was a spectator as my boyfriend played and I found it quite interesting despite not really being involved. I watched him play for a fair few hours but the gameplay was fairly slow, so unfortunately, we never found the time or the motivation to finish. The art style / colour scheme has really stuck with me after all these years and I would absolutely love to go back and finish the game sometime.

8. Twinsen: Little Big Adventure 2

My oldest gaming memory is of watching my Dad play Twinsen. I must have pestered him for weeks to play this game as my 4 year old self was too young to figure it out. I don’t know what made me want to play the game in the first place, but it’s quite amazing how much I remember it. Unfortunately, the memories don’t include how far into this game we got, but we definitely didn’t finish it and due to my age I probably just lost interest. I recently bought the Little Big Adventure series on Steam (after living a whole 3 years completely oblivious to it being right at my fingertips) so I do hope I can relive my early memories and even get as far as finishing the game someday. The Little Big Adventure series is very high up on my priority list.

7. Rayman Legends

What a fantastic puzzle platformer, and the local co op feature made it even better! I actually played this game with my boyfriend at his Dad’s house when we went to visit on occasional weekends during our time at uni. As we didn’t own this game ourselves, and we didn’t get to visit very often, we never actually got the chance to finish the game. I have purchased it myself since, but I’ve never been in the mood to start the game again from scratch since we did get pretty far into it. The Black Betty level is still one of my all time favourite gaming levels to this day!

6. Deponia Doomsday

This is sort of cheating, but it’s my list, so I guess I’m allowed to bend the rules slightly! The Deponia series is one of my all time favourites, but I finished the trilogy way before Doomsday was even released. Back in 2016, at the time of Doomsday’s release, I was a frugal student who refused to buy games unless they were on sale, no matter how much I yearned for it. When the time came around for it to finally go on sale, I found myself wanting to familiarise myself with the previous games beforehand. Yet here I am, 3 years later, and I still haven’t found the time to revisit them. I will make this happen!

5. Tales of Berseria

I started Tales of Berseria last summer on one of the very rare Sundays I have to myself. I played for the entire day and I was really getting into it, but when I quit the game to go to bed that night, I never revisited it. Why? Well, actually, I’d like to know the answer to that question myself. I’ve started a fair few JRPGs in the past few years, but I’ve never managed to stick with them any more than around 8 hours. I don’t know if this is due to how the combat generally works in these kinds of games, or if it’s more to do with the slow starts, but I just can’t seem to get stuck in like I can with other genres of games. Despite not playing it again, I really loved the character design and I came across some cracking quotes, so I really hope I can delve back into this game in the future. Maybe JRPGs just aren’t my thing no matter how much I want to like them.

4. The Witcher 2

A classic series that I’ve sadly never gotten far enough into. I began with Witcher 2 some time ago, instantly drawn in by the story and setting. I played for a fair few hours in one sitting, but as I was enjoying it a great deal more than I ever imagined, I decided I wanted to take my leave and start with the first game before playing any further. However, I never did get round to starting the Witcher and from what I’ve seen, it isn’t the smoothest of games to run. That being said, I do still really want to get into this series right from the beginning, eventually making my way to Witcher 3 – which looks absolutely stunning!

3. Red Dead Redemption

Red Dead Redemption was one of the first open world games I ever got stuck into myself. It all started when I watched my boyfriend play and he had handed me the controller whilest he left the room, telling me to catch him a good horse on his exit. It took me a solid 30 minutes, but I caught one! I was so pleased with myself, telling him to be careful and to take good care of it… Until he ran it off a cliff. Devistated. I then decided I would play the game myself and take care of my own horse way better than he did, so I did just that. I never did finish the game though, probably due to it being quite long and I had seen my boyfriend finish the story on his play through so I never really felt the need. I really hope to play Red Dead Redemption again after recently experiencing Red Dead Revolver and before I move onto RDR2 at some point in the future.

2. Nioh

Normally, I wouldn’t be drawn to this type of game at all. Nioh is probably one of the hardest games I’ve ever played, however, that’s not the main reason I didn’t finish it. I played this game using the co op feature with my boyfriend and since we both started new jobs, we just haven’t had the time to play online together. The last time we played was 10 months ago and I’d love to get back into the game as it really has been one of my favourites (surprisingly) although I don’t think I’d enjoy it half as much if I played alone. Plus, I’m forbidding myself from playing Sekiro until Nioh is finished – which is proving such a challenge with all the screenshots I’ve been eyeballing on Twitter this past few weeks!

1. Divinity Original Sin

It’s been almost four years since I last played Divinity Original Sin: Enhanced Edition. Over 50 hours were invested into this game and to this day, I still find myself wanting to get back into it. Again, I played this game with my boyfriend while we were at uni, but it reached a point where the gameplay was becoming more difficult, therefore we were getting frustrated with the combat style which resulted in us closing off the challenge. I don’t think it helped that my boyfriend likes to have multiple playthroughs on the go at once to experience different classes and decisions. I’d rather get on with one story and then start again from scratch as I often get confused with events as well as there being more distractions.

I do heavily regret not trying harder at the time due to all the effort we put in to ultimately get nowhere and now we’ll have to backtrack if we were to replay it. As much as I adored this game while we were playing together, I don’t think we’ll be revisiting it again any time soon which does make me little disheartened. I feel like I’d have a greater experience if we were to play side by side again like we did back then rather than online, so for now, I think Divinity Original Sin is just going to be put to the back of the shelf for a while longer.
