Patch 6.11 has been announced for release on Tuesday 12th November, bringing a whole load of new content to Smite. The biggest thing this patch has to be the new RWBY themed Battle Pass! As a RWBY fan myself, I think the team have done a great job creating these skins and I’ve been waiting months for this since their teaser. Alongside that there are the usual balance changes, more Odyssey content and the return of Classic Domination!
The new Legend of the Foxes horde mode adventure was brought to Smite with patch 5.2. I wasn’t going to post about this originally, but I find that so many people don’t actually know what they’re doing and I’ve found a few nifty tips and tricks that some people may find useful.
Season 5 continues with patch 5.2 this week, coming to PC 13th Feb and console 20th Feb. There’s a new adventure coming with this patch as well as the final Ragnarok bundle and the release of the Limited Ragnarok Hades skin. I’m actually really excited about this patch as I loved the previous adventures and Da Ji is getting a new skin!
With patch 5.1 coming to Smite tomorrow, I thought I’d do a review of Season 4.
This Season we saw 9 gods released in game. Although this was a few less than the previous year, the quality and variation has been much better even though nearly half of these were Guardians! The Celtic Pantheon certainly expanded leaving just an assassin needed to complete the set.
Season 4 Gods:
Kuzenbo – Japanese Guardian (4.2)
Cernunnos – Celtic Hunter (4.4)
Ganesha – Hindu Guardian (4.7)
Da Ji – Chinese Assassin (4.9)
Cu Chulainn – Celtic Warrior (4.11)
Artio – Celtic Guardian (4.14)
Hachiman – Japanese Hunter (4.17)
Discordia – Roman Mage (4.21)
Cerberus – Greek Guardian (4.25)
Season 4 also brought the new Season Ticket mechanic to the game. This saw the Season Ticket divided into 3 splits, each bringing a new bundle with it containing a limited skin, fantasy points (earned thought quests) and the new team boosters. Season 5’s Season Ticket will also follow this new layout.
Obviously there was the return of re-occurring events such as Summer of Smite and the Odyssey where you could get a load of new skins and extra rewards. Frostfire Ullr was this Season’s Limited T5 skin which could be unlocked by earning 98,000 Odyssey points.
Although it feels like forever ago, the Clash map as we now know it was also introduced in patch 4.1 this time last year. The changes to Clash weren’t as drastic as the ones being made to Conquest this year, but I really enjoyed the fresh map and the new jungle boss feature. Saying that, it does annoy me now when there are quests for “defeat the fire giant/gold fury” as this can now only be done in Conquest.
Project Olympus was also a new project announced to help improve gameplay, matchmaking, rewards, etc. The main features being the release in DirectX 11, 64 bit and the new Texture pack. There will be more work happening for Project Olympus with a new HUD layout set to launch in Season 5. I really hope they include Pantheon filters!
Introduced only a few months ago was the new chest roll mechanic, starting with the Abyssal Chest (see my post here). This new mechanic offered the choice of 3 items from that chest when a roll was purchased. The mechanic has further been used so far for the Bubble-licious Chest and the Nature’s Wrath Chest.
On the topic of chests, the Triumphant chests were also introduced. These chests are available after every win to all players, 4 per week for free. More chests could also be purchased per win with gems or favor and contained a variety of items including skins, voice packs, wards, avatars, team boosters, global emotes, announcer packs etc. and even a few exclusive items.
Adventures were also a new feature to Season 4. Fafnir’s Wonderland was introduced at the end of Season 3 which began the alternative game mode ideas. As this was enjoyed more than anticipated, the developers decided to feature 5 new adventures within the timescale of Season 4. These adventures consisted of Nike’s Rally for Victory, Apollo’s Racer Rumble, Trials of King Hercules, Corrupted Arena and Shadows Over Hercopolis. There are new adventures set to be released throughout Season 5.
All in all, I believe this Season has been pretty good. Alongside the countless amount of skins released and new features such as jump stamps and loading skins, the addition of new and interesting game modes has really made the Season for me. I have mixed feelings about the split Season Ticket as it now costs 3 times the price, but you do get limited skins to go with them and also entitles you to double the fantasy points. I can see why a lot of people were angry when this was changed.
My Season 4 Top 5:
5. New Chest Mechanic – I’m really pleased that this new mechanic exists as at least now you can choose from a few things. When I rolled the Bubble-licious chest, I kept getting the choice between 2 voice packs and a 400 gem skin for 5 rolls until I finally got the choice for Sol skin. At least by having this choice, I ended up with skins rather than other chest items.
4. Triumphant Chests – I love that these are chests you can earn for free. Although most of the time they just seemed to give me fantasy point boosters, I actually got the Khepri announcer pack out of one a while back as well as a fair few 400 gem skins.
3. Discordia – Nox was always my go to mage for any game, and although Nox is probably still my favourite mage, Discordia is a very close 2nd. I have her rank 7 already and always pick her when a mage is needed. Her burst damage can be insane but I wouldn’t say she is overpowered. She is very good at handling groups of enemies in teamfights but there are definitely situations where she isn’t as strong. I find her really fun to play and I’m definitely interested in testing out new items with her in Season 5.
2. Trials of King Hercules – This was by far my favourite adventure. The new gameplay was really different and required you to explore, figure out the enemies and collect items for your build to progress through the dungeon. When it was first released and I spent the majority of my time solely on this adventure because I enjoyed it so much.
1. Da Ji – My favourite character in the entire game. She is my 2nd most played God with almost 2K worshipers. Her kit just fits my playstyle perfectly, and I never seem to get bored playing her. I’m interested to see if I can come up with an even better build for her in Season 5 than the one I’m already using…
Hope you all enjoy Season 5! Let me know your thoughts on Season 4 below!
The next adventure, Shadows Over Hercopolis, was brought to Smite with patch 4.21. I was really looking forward to playing this adventure as I really enjoyed the Trials of King Hercules Adventure early this year. Once again, this mode is for 3 players who can be solo queued, parties or a mixture of both.
If you missed out on the Trials of King Hercules Adventure, follow the link to catch up on the content there.
For details on Hard mode, see the bottom of the post.
Patch 4.21 brought 2 difficulty modes to the game, Normal and Hard mode. Normal is the entry level dungeon which everyone will start on to build up their inventory and work their way through the different stages. Hard mode will become available to players who complete the dungeon on the Normal mode. I believe Hard mode will be the same as the Normal mode in terms of content, but this mode will be open to players who have already experience the dungeon and will therefore be able to complete it faster for loot. There will also be a Nightmare mode added, but this will be released with patch 4.22.
Once again there are a few gods banned in this mode as they have abilities that will not work with the PvE style of the game. These are mainly gods with pets and global abilities. The gods that are not able to be chosen are: Ao Kuang, Apollo, Chronos, Erlang Shen, Hades, Hercules, Izanami, Janus, Jing Wei, Loki, Nu Wa, Rama, Ratatoskr, Susano, Thanatos, The Morrigan, Thor,
Clicking on the Adventures tab on the Smite homepage will open the Hercopolis menu. Like before in the Trials of King Herc Adventure, you will be able to use the facilities around Hercopolis but you will notice that the town’s statue is missing.
There are different quests you can complete at the different areas in the town, starting with the Blacksmith. You will need to complete these quests in order. If it’s like the last adventure, players who haven’t purchased the bundle will only be able to complete the quests at the Blacksmith and Church and won’t be able to use any of the town services in any area even if the currency has been unlocked.
The town services at the Treasury will only become available after completing the “Defeat the Surtr” quest at the Church, even if you have purchased the bundle. These services will allow you to turn your Diamonds into Smite Gems and your Rubies into Gold to spent on item chests.
If you click on the missing statue in the middle of the town, you will see that you can collect pieces of it from chests throughout the dungeon. Collecting all the pieces of the statue will award you with the Legion Hercules skin (250 gem skin).
The bundle costs 900 gems and comes with the Agent of Darkness Loki skin, a music pack, avatar, loading skin and Golden Key (for a choice of skin in the Golden Vault) and will also unlock all of the town content for the Shadows Over Hercopolis Adventure. If you’re interested in the Adventure, I suggest buying this bundle as you will be able to purchase items rather than just looting them which will make the collection process so much faster and far less of a grind. Buying the bundle will also allow you to unlock an Awesome Chest, 2 Enigma Chests, 10 Minor Chests and earn up to 100 gems for completing certain quests throughout the process.
So far, I have spent about 4 hours on this Adventure and I’ve only defeated the Draugr once despite being in numerous parties with different team compositions and item combinations. Obviously I don’t have many items yet and to me it feels much slower to farm items and gold than it did in the last Adventure. This may be because the Rare item chest rolls cost 2000 gold this time instead of 1500 gold, and since the dungeon is a lot bigger it takes longer to get to chests and boss sections.
This is the team I defeated the Draugr with and the items we had for the run:
*Edit: I have now been playing this Adventure for about 9 hours and only just managed to defeat the Surtr. It’s a long process, but once you’ve completed the “Defeat the Surtr” quest and unlocked the use of the Treasury services then it seems like it will speed up a bit since you can turn Rubies into 3000 Gold to spent on an Epic item.
Some heroes I recommend are Aphrodite, Hel, Amaterasu, Bellona, Artemis, Cernunnos and AMC as these are the Gods I have found to perform best, however, it does depend on what items you have.
I’m not going to feature any spoilers in this post, but all I will say is that defeating the Draugr is not the end of the Normal mode…
Hope you all have fun and safe travels on your journey into the depths of the dungeon!
I’ve found that 2 ADCs (Cern, AMC, Anhur or Ullr) and Aphrodite work best. I’ve also beat Loki with players who have yet to collect a full item build (as shown below), so just give people a chance as it is doable.
After you defeat Surtr, you will drop through the floor and into the next section in an underground jail. Here you will have to fight your way through a number of familiar enemies to unlock the gate leading to Loki.
I have defeated Loki 4 times now with different line ups and builds. Here are a few screen shots showing some of them if you’re struggling.
Loki Trinkets don’t drop every time, so you might have to defeat Loki multiple times before getting the trinkets needed to open the Awesome, Enigma (x2) and Minor (x10) chests.
I haven’t tried Nightmare mode as I’m not really bothered about getting the Avatar, and from videos I’ve seen, it looks like it’s going to be difficult for people who aren’t playing in parties. The Animated version of the Avatar that comes with the bundle is the only extra reward you will receive by completing Nightmare mode.
Corrupted Arena is the fourth adventure added to Smite brought to the game in Patch 4.15. This adventure involves an altered version of the arena map where players can defeat other players by knocking them of edges into chasms in the map. This game mode is separate from the normal arena game mode so both are still available to play until patch 4.18 when Corrupted Arena will end.
You can play this adventure game mode without buying the bundle. The 900 gem bundle comes with the Dragon’s Rage Kukulkan skin (limited), Corrupted Ward, Music Pack, Corrupted Avatar, a Golden Key, 2500 shards and double shards are also awarded at the end of each game.
Shards are used as in an in game currency to buy a selection of skins, emotes, announcer packs, favour and fantasy points. There are 24 items to collect which will award the player with an Awesome chest when completed. Since the Awesome chest has been specific to adventure bundles so far, I believe people who have not bought the bundle will not receive the Awesome chest even when all items have been unlocked. However, players who have not bought the bundle can still earn shards and unlock all of the 24 items but at a slower rate. If you already own some of the items, then that item will already count towards the completion and cannot be unlocked again or swapped for anything else. I already owned 10 of these items, so can only unlock 14 altogether using shards.
There are 3 parts to these unlocks, 8 items costing 750 shards each, 8 items costing 1500 shards each and 8 items (including 3 exclusive skins) for 2500 shards each. Please note, spending your shards will grant you one item from the section at random. Although you can pick the section, you cannot choose which item you get. Shard bundles of 2500 shards are also available to purchase for 200 gems per bundle.
For a win you can expect to get about 250 shards and about 150 for a loss, double that if you have the bundle, but it depends on the game length as to how many you will actually get. Shown below is the amount of shards I earned for a win with the bundle as a general expectation as to how many games you will need to get all the rewards.
This is what the map looks like. As you can see there are parts of the floor missing around the back of the buff camps on both sides (to start with). Throughout the game the map evolves, creating more obstacles as the game progresses.
I think Hi-Rez have done a really good job with the amount of detail they have put into making over this map but the effects (particularly sound effects) could do with being a bit more noticeable when more of the floor crumbles away or something drops from the sky as I found I would turn around and something would have just appeared out of nowhere. Maybe some short screen shake or something? Caged Kuku with chains attached to the crumbling pillars looks really great though and I like the dark environment with a really pretty starry sky. Nice work guys!
Changé, Erlang Shen, Jing Wei, Kukulkan, Skadi, and The Morrigan are banned from this game mode, but all the other gods can be chosen. I’ve found the strongest Gods for this adventure are Xing Tian, Hercules, Anhur, Kuzenbo and Sobek due to their hard CC abilities as they are great for throwing people into the chasms. My personal favourite to play at the moment is Serqet as throwing someone into the chasm with her ult is rather satisfying, and even if they do ‘beads’ out of the throw, they take a truckload of damage anyway.
You will still earn worshipers, favour, fantasy points and experience for playing this game mode unlike the past adventures, but any stats (wins, kills, deaths, assists, etc.) will not be saved to your God’s history (like MOTD), nor will the game show up in your game history. Speaking of which, MOTD has been intentionally disabled for the adventure and is scheduled to return in patch 4.17.
The queue times seem rather long considering it’s new, most of the time I can be waiting up to 3 minutes before I find a game – minor problem though. I haven’t found any noticeable bugs or anything yet either which is good.
I think I’ll have a lot of fun playing this adventure since I do enjoy playing arena and this is so much more entertaining, silly and it can end up being such a mess of God’s flying all over the place, being thrown to their deaths.
Let me know you thoughts!
Patch 4.10 was released earlier today and with it came the new adventure: Trails of King Hercules. I’ve been really excited for this adventure since I saw it on the Patch Notes show last week and I have seen a few videos of people playing the first “Easy” mode on PTS so I did know what to expect. This mode is for 3 players who can be solo queued, partied or a mixture (party of 2 and one solo).
*Edit: For details on hard mode see the bottom of the post!
There are a few Gods you are unable to play as in this mode as they are either too strong or have aspects which could cause problems in the game. These Gods are: Ao Kuang, Apollo, Chronos, Hades, Hercules, Izanami, Janus, Jing Wei, Ne Zha, Nu Wa, Rama, Ratatoskr, Thanatos, The Morrigan and Thor. So basically anyone with a global ability and I know Hades and Izanami were really strong in PTS so they have probably been banned for that reason…
Firstly I loaded into the game and opened the Adventures tab which led me to the Hercoplis town menu.
There are 4 sections to the town. You can complete some of the quests within the town without buying the bundle (all the quests at the Blacksmith and Church, and the first 2 quests at the Treasury), but you cannot access any of the town services without buying the bundle for 900 gems even if you have looted the currency.
As you can see from the screenshot, this is the Blacksmith hub. There are 3 quests available which have to be selected to be completed meaning only one quest can be active at a time. You need to click on the quest you want to activate and click “Accept”. When you have completed the quest you will need to click the “Accept” button again (which will say completed) to be given your reward. From the “Kill 10 Boars or Harpies” quest I was awarded the Morningstar item (first tier of Transcendence and Hydra’s Lament) which gives me 10 Physical Power.
The services section at the bottom allows you to spend the gold you earn in the dungeon on chests to unlock an item. It appears that you can only buy items from here if you have bought the 900 gem bundle. In my opinion, this is really stupid as Hi-Rez usually make it so you can complete the in game content (but without the rewards) if you don’t buy the bundle. This is difficult though if you can’t buy any items to make you stronger in the Dungeon as you’re just relying on luck to get decent items, however, you can get tier 3 item drops from boss chests. When trading for chests you don’t get to choose your item, but there are 3 chests you can purchase:
- Uncommon Item (1000 gold) – gives you a random first tier item e.g. Morningstar.
- Rare Item (1500 gold) – gives you a random second tier item e.g. Charged Bow.
- Epic Item (3000 gold) – gives you a random third tier (complete) item e.g. Bloodforge.
Since I was awarded a Physical Power item, I decided to play as Cupid, mainly for the heals and he can do well if he runs out of mana. At the beginning of each game you will need to re-equip all the items you want/need for your run but you can only equip items you have received out of chests. This means that you will not be able to equip items on your first run. You can change or equip new items during the run when you are awarded item chests for completing boss fights which I’m glad about as you pick up items from chests during the play through.
Currently these are the only items I have, so I selected those. Just like normal you can equip up to 6 items so even if you don’t have decent items for your character at the start, it’s still worth equipping them until you get better ones later on. Also if you get a magical power item but want to play as a physical god you can still equip the item – even though the power won’t be used by your god, if the item has another stat e.g. health, then your character will still receive the health stat.
For example: If I had 2 items, Heavy Mace (25 Magical Power, 10 Penetration) and Uncommon Sash (15 Magical Power, 75 Health) and I chose to play as Chaac, I could equip both items to have the stats 25 Magical Power, 10 Penetration and 75 Health as the 15 Magical Power will not be effective on Physical Gods.
After playing a few games I decided to buy the bundle as I like the Vanguard Hercules skin and I love the Abyssal Sorcerer Poseidon. I think I will play this a lot as it has similarities to other games I play so to me it is interesting to see how it’s been done in Smite. So here is what is included in the bundle:
For buying the bundle, you are immediately awarded the Vanguard Hercules skin, Dungeon Jump Stamp, Dungeon Loading Frame and Dungeon Music Theme as well as 1 Golden Key. Here is what you can unlock with your Golden Key:
The Golden Key gives you the choice of ONE of the following skins. You can unlock all these skins if you have bought all the bundles, as one key is included per bundle. You are given a fifth key if you buy all 4 bundles (there’s still one more adventure to come, so don’t worry, we have only had 3 so far!) which also means there is another skin to come too! You can hold onto your key/s until all the skins have been released which I think I might do and see if the next skin can possibly be better than the Poseidon one!
Other benefits of buying the bundle are other rewards such as an Awesome Chest (containing only exclusive skins), 2 Enigma Chests (containing 600, 400, 250, 100 gem skins, voice packs, avatars or wards) and some Minor Chests (containing emotes and boosters) and 100 gems!
This is the first room where you are awarded an item for defeating the enemy waves. The first boss is just after this room. I don’t want to talk about the levels too much as I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but it can be quite tricky… just keep playing and farm some gold and loot some items! Don’t forget that once you complete the easy mode, the hard mode will become available which I believe has different bosses and probably a new level scenario all together… we’ll wait and see!
Have fun in the Dungeon!
*Edit (11th June):
Well obviously because this is Hi-Rez the hard mode is still the same level… what was I thinking. It’s definitely a lot harder and I wouldn’t even try this mode until you have all the Epic items or at least a full build. Although, saying that I had a full ADC build and someone had a go at me for playing hard because I didn’t have any healer items and they personally didn’t want to play a healer…. so I recommend farming all the items first unless you want angry players.
I’ve managed to complete the hard mode twice. The whole level is the same with the same enemies and mechanics, just more difficult. After the Lion you go through the other set of doors where there’s a short farming section before the Hydra boss. I completed the Hydra in the same party twice with the same line up and item selection which I will show you here:
The two people I played with were already in a party together, so I would definitely say that it is easier to play with people you know or who you can chat to while you are playing. It’s also worth buying all three blessings each (you can only buy blessings if you have bought the bundle) before you start your runs if you’re in a party and know there’s a chance you can complete it. I had a Blessing of Might during my first run and then all three blessings on the second run.
I’ve seen loads of different line ups working, mainly with a healer and two ADCs so I was shocked in a way to see it work with a tank. As Aphrodite I was tethered to Amaterasu 95% of the time as Cernunnos had plenty of lifesteal and Amaterasu was taking the agro. If you are playing with two ADCs as a healer, picking Shogun’s Kasari instead of Rod of Tahuti is a really great choice as it still gives you mana regeneration and helps with the attack speed of your teammates greatly (it also has handy cooldown too)! I didn’t buy it this time because Amaterasu did and there’s no need for two as they don’t stack and we’re always grouped up anyway.
Because our party killed the Hydra twice, I got 2 Hydra Scales to spend on chests. I got an Enigma chest for completing the quest “Defeat the Hydra” and bought another Enigma chest and an Awesome chest with the scales. I got Demon Catcher Zhong Kui from the Awesome chest and Nile Stalker Sobek and Bacchus’ Voice Pack from the Enigma chests. If I get another scale I can get another Enigma chest roll…
Lastly, here is a nice glitch which happened after myself and another player defeated the boar on easy (then died at the spiders) with a disconnected player still at the starting zone…
Let me know your thoughts and be sure to let me know any other ways, line ups and builds you defeated the hydra with.
