Alphabetical Backlog Challenge

Today marks 6 years since I first started this little blog here on WordPress! I was unsure how I was going to celebrate this milestone until I read Gaming Dairies’ Plati-Alphabet challenge last week where I was inspired to do something similar. It was then that the A.B.C. (Alphabetical Backlog Challenge) was born! As my backlog is my biggest focus for this year, I thought this would be a fun way to cross some titles off the list and allow me to look back and review my progress later on. Since I play primarily on Steam and across other platforms occasionally too, the Platinum part of the challenge didn’t fully work for me, so I’ve altered a few things from GD’s version of the challenge to fit my personal backlog goals – the biggest difference being that I’m not aiming for 100% completion on every single game. As long as I finish the main story, that’s good enough for me!

The Rules:

  • Any games purchased after March 1st do not count (regardless of release date) unless I don’t already own a game corresponding to a letter.
  • Only games completed after March 1st count towards the challenge, but games I’ve already started are okay to include.
  • Games in Early Access or games with no defined ending do not count e.g. MMOs, MOBAs, etc.
  • I do not need to 100% games for them to count, I just need to roll credits at least once.
  • I may not stick to the list below, but any alternative choices must abide by the previous rules.
  • Games do not have to be played in alphabetical order.
  • All platforms are allowed!

I’m not setting myself a definite deadline as I don’t want to pressure myself so I can actually enjoy these games, but I plan to do a review in a year’s time, on my 7th anniversary, to see how far I actually got. The games in bold are games I’ve already started, but I’m currently only a couple of hours into each.

The Backlog-abet!

A – American McGee’s Alice

B – Birushana: Rising Flower of Genpei

C – Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

D – Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc

E – Eastern Exorcist

F – FEZ

G – Grim Guardians: Demon Purge

H – Hollow Knight

I – Indivisible

J – (Jack Jeanne)

K – Killer is Dead

L – Little Big Adventure 2

M – My Vow To My Liege

N – NieR:Automata

O – Ozmafia!!

P – Project Zero

Q – Quake

R – River City Girls 2

S – Slow Damage

T – Tales of Beseria

U – Umineko When They Cry

V – Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

W – The Witcher

X – XOXO Droplets

Y – Yakuza 3

Z – Zero Escape: The Nonary Games

I can’t believe I own almost 500 games and don’t own a single game on any platform that starts with J! Since I don’t have any, I featured Jack Jeanne in my list instead. Jack Jeanne was released in Japan in 2021 and will be released in English in June (why are there suddenly so many Js). I preordered a copy back in November, so even though it’s a new release, it’s not really a brand new game… and it’s a double J to make up for it!

Thank you to Gaming Dairies for allowing me to take part in the challenge! I’m looking forward to seeing how far I can get by this time next year and I’m intrigued to see if I actually stick to the list I created above or if I end up changing any – and how many!

Thanks for reading!
