The End of Year Gaming Tag [2020]

With 2020 pretty much over now, I decided to do the End of Year Gaming Tag to round off the year. I first saw this idea from McKenna over at McKenna Talks About Games and thought it was a fantastic way to end the 2020 gaming year before starting fresh in 2021.

  • Answer the questions.
  • Tag however many people as you want!

What are you currently playing?

Skylar-Mei: Not much as I haven’t wanted to start anything big for the past few weeks – I’m waiting for 2021! I did start playing Spiritfarer a last week though and made WesleyWhale join me 😁

WesleyWhale: Over the past couple of months, I have really been getting into Monster Hunter World, but I’ve just gotten Quakespasm to work… so now I’m playing Quake and I will continue playing Quake until I finish it for the umpteenth time.

Are there any new games you started this year that you need to finish?

Skylar-Mei: I stopped playing Ori and the Will of Wisps when I reached around 2hrs play time. Although I really liked the game, I wasn’t in the mood to play something challenging at the time and unfortunately I never found myself in the right frame of mind to get back into it.

WesleyWhale: I bought Ultrakill on it’s release in September and I’ve hardly played it. My Steam library is absolutely loaded with shooters that I need to play.

Is there a new release or update you’re still waiting for?

WesleyWhale: The Steam release of Nioh 2. Really enjoyed the first game and I’m looking forward to playing more – I hope the port is better this time.

Skylar-Mei: Also Nioh 2. We’ve been waiting for the Steam release since it was first announced for PlayStation. Only a couple of months left!

Any other games you want to play before the end of the year?

Skylar-Mei: It’s a bit late to do anything now, but I’d like to finish Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty before the New Year. I was hoping to get stuck into CafĂ© EnchantĂ© which didn’t happen, so that’s first on the list for 2021.

WesleyWhale: I finished Greedfall which I’m happy about, but I’m in no rush to finish anything else before the New Year.

What game that was announced this year has you most excited?

WesleyWhale: I’m a bitter old man and I struggle to get excited by things these days.

Skylar-Mei: I’m pretty hyped about Fable 4, but I have concerns that it’s not going to be like the previous games. I’m also pretty excited about all the otome visual novel localisations that have been announced for next year!

What is your favourite trophy/achievement that you’ve obtained this year?

WesleyWhale: I don’t really pay that much attention to achievements because personally I’m not bothered, however, this year I did find myself playing Fable Anniversary on Steam and the Fable series has some pretty comical achievements that usually require you to do some ridiculous tasks. A prime example of this is “I Did This For A Cheevo” which requires you to ‘Perform a headshot with a Crossbow whilst dressed as a woman wearing a beard and the Redhead Wig’.

Skylar-Mei: There isn’t a single achievement that comes to mind but I did set myself a goal to complete 60 games during 2020. I’m due to finish my 66th game of the year tomorrow with 31 of those games being 100% completed. I’m pretty happy with this.

Did you purchase any new consoles/upgrades that made a difference in your gaming this year?

WesleyWhale: I purchased a new motherboard, however, it was only an upgrade in so much that this one actually works. My previous motherboard, that I had been happily using for the past 5 years, suddenly died and it was a mad panic to find a replacement.

Skylar-Mei: Not this year. Wesley gifted me an upgraded set of Razer Chroma peripherals last Christmas, so I have everything I need. I did almost purchase a Razer Kitty Kraken Headset as my Krakens have seen better days, but I decided to wait for a wireless version instead.

Have you changed any of your gaming habits this year?

WesleyWhale: I drink more when I play DotA 2.

Skylar-Mei: We had to cut down on the local co-op gaming due to the whole lockdown situation which sucked, but at least Steam’s Remote Play Together helped with that to a certain extent.

WesleyWhale: Steam Remote Play Together is a great service for so many reasons. I highly recommend anyone who is interested in PC multiplayer games to check this out.

Who is your favourite character of the year?

Skylar-Mei: I listed my top 5 favourite characters in the Seriously Geeky Sundays: 2020 in Fandoms post I wrote the other day, but I think my overall favourite was probably Yang from Piofiore.

WesleyWhale: For me, the answer is obvious, although I’m slightly cheating as I’m picking two characters… I’d give this one to 2020’s unlikely twosome: Isabelle and The Doom Slayer. If you’d been on Twitter during April, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

What is you personal game of the year and why?

Skylar-Mei: I’m going to say Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Although it’s by far not the best game I’ve played this year, it was released just as our Japan trip was cancelled and lockdown began. I was in need of a chill game at this time so ACNH helped to a certain extent – I’m still playing it occasionally even now. I think a lot of people will agree, ACNH was a well needed game this year.

WesleyWhale: Ultrakill. I’ve only played a couple of 2020 releases this year so there’s not much competition, but I think it’s still a good pick. I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve played so far.

Have you already started making gaming plans for 2021?

WesleyWhale: Nope. I haven’t made any plans so I’ll cross each gaming bridge as come to it.

Skylar-Mei: Of course! I made a lot of progress on the volume of my backlog last year, so during 2021 I plan to steadily work my way through some longer games. I also want to get stuck into some more visual novels and make time for the new otome releases 2021 is set to bring. I’m not aiming to complete loads of games this year, but focus on those I want to play the most.

As usual, I’m not going to specifically tag anybody, but to anyone who read this post – consider yourself nominated! This tag has been a great way to reflect on the gaming year of 2020 and it would be great for more people to get involved! Here’s the list of questions if you’d like to take part:
