The Horror Tag

Welcome to the Hallowe’en season over at gamergal.exe! It’s my favourite time of the year, so for the next 6 days running up to Hallowe’en, I’ll be presenting a post each day with a Hallowe’en theme and bringing my good friend WesleyWhale back once again to join me.

First up, it’s The Horror Tag from Michelle at A Geek Girl’s Guide featuring a bonus question from McKenna! Let’s get started!

How old were you when you saw your first horror movie?

Skylar-Mayhem: I probably would have been in my early teens when I saw my first ‘proper’ horror film since my family have never been into films and all my friends absolutely hated horror films.

WesleyWails: I was too young to remember and I couldn’t possibly hazard a guess at how old I would’ve been.

What was the first horror movie you saw?

Skylar-Mayhem: I watched the Indiana Jones films when I was pretty young. Temple of Doom was pretty scary so I’m going to count that.

WesleyWails: When I was a child, we had Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask on VHS. Thinking back now, I don’t think it was a film as such, but rather a collection of short TV episodes, but that didn’t make it any less traumatic.

Skylar-Mayhem: I was a huge fan of the Goosebumps books when I was younger, but I don’t really recall the TV episodes. Considering they were made for children, the stories were still pretty frightening.

What is your favourite horror movie?

Skylar-Mayhem: Battle Royale (2000) is one of my all time favourite films. I suppose it’s more of a thriller than a horror film, but I honestly can’t get enough of it. Cube (1997) has also been one of my favourites for a long time.

WesleyWails: Evil Dead 2. The Evil Dead Trilogy is Sam Raimi’s magnum opus. Evil Dead 2 is the film I enjoyed the most. but the entire series is a must see.

Do you prefer gore or thrillers?

WesleyWails: I’m inclined to say thrillers. For me, the most appealing aspect of a horror movie is suspense. I find thrillers tend to carry that element much better.

Skylar-Mayhem: Either as long as the plot is decent. Thrillers do tend to have the same sort of plot twists which can get pretty boring, but on the other hand, gore films just tend to be about the visuals.

WesleyWails: Gore is fine if it’s done right.

If you got trapped in one scary movie, which would you choose?

Skylar-Mayhem: The Happiness of the Katakuri’s. I feel like they need some normal-ish guests to stay in their guesthouse for a change.

WesleyWails: They seem like nice enough people… when they’re not burying their guests by the lake.

If you were in a horror movie, would you be the final girl, the first to die, the comic relief, the smart one, or the killer?

WesleyWails: The final girl for sure.

Skylar-Mayhem: I’d hope I was the smart one, but if endurance is involved then I’d probably be the first one out…

While watching a horror movie, are you the person who yells at the characters, the person covering their eyes the whole time, or the person who falls asleep?

Skylar-Mayhem: I’m the person pointing out the plot holes, camera inconsistencies and voicing my thoughts whenever I find something dumb. It happens a lot… (e.g. That guy’s scarf is over the opposite shoulder than it was in the last shot).

WesleyWails: Skylar-Mei, pretending like she doesn’t fall asleep while we’re watching movies…

Skylar-Mayhem: Hey, I only fall asleep if the film is incredibly boring or if I’m really tired, okay?

Have you ever played a horror game? What is your favourite horror game?

WesleyWails: F.E.A.R. I played this again recently and it was just as enjoyable this time as it was when I first played it many years ago. The game handles the transitions between its combat sequences and its horror sequences masterfully, making it possibly the most entertaining horror game to date.

Skylar-Mayhem: Good choice! Silent Hill 2 is obviously high on the list too, however, I really got into Forbidden Siren when we gave it a shot a few Hallowe’ens ago. Unfortunately we got stuck in a plot loop and couldn’t figure out how to progress. Due to the lack of guides available we eventually gave up. Gutted.

WesleyWails: I do like some survival horror games (Silent Hill being a series I’m particularly fond of) but I’m put off by many of them, simply because they tend to be lacking in the all-important fun factor. We gave up on Forbidden Siren not because of any particular challenge, but because it became tiresome and frustrating to play.

If you got trapped in one horror game, what would you want it to be?

Skylar-Mayhem: Charlotte’s Exile. I think we’d do a pretty decent job at figuring out the text cypher and not getting caught by the spooky creature whilst we translate.

WesleyWails: Not to brag but myself and Skylar-Mei are usually pretty good at figuring out puzzles, especially when we put our heads together.

Skylar-Mei: This actually sounds pretty fun too.

What upcoming horror game(s) are you looking forward to?

Skylar-Mayhem: Little Nightmares 2 and Scarlet Hollow. After watching Oney Plays Little Nightmares this Hallowe’en season, I realised how much I loved the first game myself after playing it earlier in the year and now I’m really looking forward to the next game. I also played episode 1 of upcoming Kickstarter visual novel, Scarlet Hollow, and was really impressed with what I saw. This is scheduled for a 2023 release so there’s a while to wait yet.

WesleyWails: FAITH: The Unholy Trinity. I’ve been interested in this series since it started to gain popularity on itchio. During the Steam Games Summer Festival, I’d seen it was due to release on Steam as a trilogy. I can’t wait for this to come out so I can MORTIS all over again.
