Seriously Geeky Sundays: Animation

This is my first entry to the Seriously Geeky Sundays prompt created by Heather at Just Geeking By, with this week’s theme created and hosted by Megan at A Geeky Gal. I thought this animation theme would be a great introduction to join in with the SGS community and I hope to contribute more in the near future.

What is your favourite Disney movie?

That would be Mulan. I’ve always loved this film despite the sequel being really bad. The new live action film seemed quite interesting when I first heard about it, but now it’s massively flopped, I think I’ll just stick Disney’s animated version or the 2009 Chinese live action version.

What is you favourite non-Disney movie?

Your Name is one of my favourite films of all time. I’ve watched it countless times and each time I watch it, I get exactly the same feeling as I did the first time I saw it. I think I’ll always have a soft spot for this film.

Studio Ghibli’s Whisper of the Heart is a very close second and it would be outrageous to write an entire post about animation and not mention Studio Ghibli. Although this is a lesser known title, I adore this film with its messages of encouragement and support – it’s really inspiring.

What is your favourite animated show?

rwby header

A few years ago, I was completely obsessed with RWBY. Although I still like the show, I much preferred the early seasons by the late Monty Oum – but unfortunately, it’s not been the same since. I’m still yet to see the latest series, but now I’ve reminded myself, I think I’ll take a look. The RWBY series also has its own fan made video game: RWBY Grimm Eclipse, a mobile game: RWBY Arena, characters featured in BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle and most recently had the RWBY team created as cosmetic skins in my favourite MOBA, Smite.

What was your favourite childhood show?

funny bones

In a dark, dark town there was a dark, dark street… I can’t believe I almost forgot about Funny Bones! I used to watch these old episodes on repeat at my grandma’s all the time and it’s certainly an old family favourite – all my cousins used to watch it too and now their kids are being introduced to the series. It’s a real shame these three skeletons weren’t more popular.

Who is your favourite animated character?

I always struggle with character questions, but this time round I’m going to pick one of my favourite anime characters – Kanna from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. I love Kanna’s curiousness and how the way she interacts with things around her can come across as cute, on the possessive side and often quite awkward in a comedic sense. She’s super adorable despite not being especially expressive and one of my favourite things about her is her initial reaction to eat almost anything. Nom.

What is your favourite piece of music from animation?

One of the things I loved most about Your Name was the soundtrack. Written by Japanese rock band, RADWIMPS, this OST really stood out for me as well as the songs overlapping with my other main interest – utaite. The songs from the anime were covered by so many utaites and I hope to do my own cover of Nademonaiya some day. Similarly, Weathering With You’s OST was also written by RADWIMPS, and although I wasn’t a huge fan of the film itself, the soundtrack was fantastic.

Thanks again to Heather and Megan for these Seriously Geeky Sundays prompts!

Thanks for reading!

  1. It is lovely to have you join us Skylar-Mei! 🙂 And thank you for reminding me of Funny Bones!! I used to love that show as a child too 🙂 Mulan is also one of my favourite Disney movies too (goodness, what was I thinking asking all of us to pick just one?! hehe).

    1. Thanks, Heather! You’re probably the first person I know that’s also seen Funny Bones! I was always amazed that no one else had ever even heard of it. Disney films are always going to be classics so it’s not surprising that it’s so hard to pick just the one (although I guess I did cheat a little for question 2) 😅
