What is your favourite video game genre?
When it comes to gaming, I’m not usually swayed by the genre as I like a whole bunch of games. I play anything from MOBAs, platformers, fighters, RPGs, point and click adventures, visual novels – you name it. I’d say I get sucked into otome visual novels the most as generally the stories and characters are superbly written and grab my attention far more than any book would. Bonus points for the ones that are fully voiced!
What is your favourite music genre?
Any time I can talk about utaite, I’ll take it! Utaite is a form of J-Pop derived from Vocaloid music where artists repost vocal covers of Vocaloid songs on Japanese site Nico Nico Douga. The genre has since expanded (now generally describing the artists as apposed to the style of music), including a variation of straight up vocal covers, rearrangements, collaborations and some artists even write and produce their own songs too. There’s many reasons I’ve become a total sucker for this genre – the variation is incredible, going from upbeat pop, heavy rock, piano arrangements, oriental instrumentation, electro-swing, rap – you name it! I also love listening to the ways different artists put their stamp on a song, as well as providing the opportunity to love the song again just as much as when you first heard the original. Collaborations are a huge factor too as so many different artists come together as duos or even as large groups – you never know what’s coming next!
What games do you play when you want to relax?
Strange answer: Smite – one of the more stressful games I play. Why? Matches usually last around 20 minutes, making the game easy to jump into and just as easy to jump out of. Since I’m very familiar with the game, I play music in the background and turn down my game sounds for the ultimate chill gaming session. Alternatively, when I get home from work, I enjoy getting stuck into a visual novel as they require zero effort other than to pay attention to the story.
What are your favourite hobbies?
Gaming is obviously my main hobby, but I also enjoy singing. I’m not very good at it and have zero confidence, but it’s something I’ve always enjoyed. I play a bit of guitar and have recently started drawing, but I don’t invest as much time as I’d like into these two arts. The other major hobby I have is studying Japanese. I’ve been learning for a few years on and off but I keep losing direction with my self studies and not progressing for a while. However, I’m determined to get better at it.
What shows or movies are you watching right now?
I’m planning a bunch of posts for #AniMay next month, so right now I’m watching the 3rd series of Hakuoki (Dawn of the Shinsengumi) and rewatching a few Studio Ghibli titles.
What is your favourite video game and/or TV series?
If we’re talking visual novel series, then I’d have to say Higurashi When They Cry. It’s the only series I’ve waited in anticipation for over the past few years and I’d be thrilled if the bonus chapters also get localised in the future. For now though, I’m just over the moon that the final chapter is being released in a few weeks.
What helps you feel calm?
Music. Whatever I’m doing, I always feel better when I have music playing. It raises my concentration, motivation and keeps my mind more focused as well as generally lifting my mood. This has been the case for as long as I can remember, and although my music tastes have changed over the years, I still get the same feeling while listening to my favourite songs.
I’ve seen a fair few of these Awards going around, so I’m not going to tag anyone for now – sorry for being a killjoy (I’m not very good with these things). By all means, if you’d like to answer Kelly’s questions, go ahead! This is a fantastic set of questions for introducing yourself a little better!
